The Caregiver Who Blocked My Calls

At 2:14 on a Wednesday afternoon, I walked into my mother’s house and discovered the person hired to care for her had secretly blocked my calls.

Shelby Rourke sat at my mother’s kitchen table holding her phone, scrolling through blocked contacts, and my name appeared on the list four different times.

For months, I had believed my 82-year-old mother was simply too tired to answer, but the truth was far more painful.

Shelby claimed she was protecting my mother from stress, but she had actually been controlling who could reach her.

I lived in Denver while my brother Holden lived nearby, so after my mother’s fall left her struggling alone, we hired Shelby to help with daily care.

At first, everything seemed perfect because Shelby cooked meals, drove my mother to appointments, and became someone we trusted completely.

Then the missed calls started, the excuses grew, and my mother slowly disappeared from my life.

I kept telling myself there had to be a reasonable explanation because trusting a caregiver was easier than believing something was wrong.

The turning point came when my mother’s longtime neighbor called and revealed she had stopped attending church and barely spoke to anyone anymore.

I flew home without warning and found Shelby sitting with my mother’s phone, where I discovered missed calls, notes saying “handled,” and a voicemail box filled with messages my mother never heard.

When I finally sat with my mother, she broke down and revealed Shelby had been telling her that I was too busy, overwhelmed, and needed distance.

My mother thought I had stopped wanting to talk to her, while I believed she no longer wanted me around.

But the shocking truth was not only that Shelby had separated a daughter from her mother, but that she had also been quietly taking advantage of the woman she claimed to protect. The evidence hidden inside my mother’s records would reveal a betrayal neither of us expected.
