The Old Man Was Never Poor

One of the men in dark suits walked straight toward Bernard.

“Mr. Holloway, your car is ready.”

Preston’s expression changed.

“Mr. Holloway?”

Bernard looked at me.

“My full name is Bernard Holloway. I founded Holloway Financial forty-three years ago.”

I nearly dropped the coffee pot.

Everyone in the city knew that name.

Bernard had spent months visiting the diner quietly after his wife died, dressing simply because he wanted to be treated like an ordinary man instead of a wealthy one.

Then he pointed toward Preston.

“This man just told his mother that losing everything was her consequence.”

One of the bodyguards handed Bernard a folder.

Inside were copies of property transfers, account records, and documents connected to the sale of my home.

Bernard had asked his legal team to review my situation after I once mentioned that my children had “helped” reorganize my finances.

His attorneys had already found serious irregularities.

Preston went pale.

“What did you do?”

Bernard answered calmly.

“I made sure someone finally looked at what happened to her.”

That afternoon, I met with his attorney.

The questionable transfers were challenged, records were preserved, and the circumstances surrounding my home and savings were formally investigated.

Bernard did not hand me a fortune.

He gave me something far more important.

A real chance to fight for what had been taken from me.

Preston entered the diner laughing at my downfall.

He left knowing someone powerful had finally started asking how I got there.
