How Long Does Brewed Coffee Stay Safe? The Answer May Surprise You

My partner has a routine that I never thought much about until recently. Every few days, they brew a large pot of coffee, pour it into a thermos, and keep it for making iced coffee later. It certainly saves time on busy mornings, but I started wondering whether drinking coffee that had been sitting around for several days was actually safe. After all, just because it still smells like coffee doesn’t necessarily mean it’s still good.

The answer depends largely on how the coffee is stored. Plain black brewed coffee should be cooled and refrigerated as soon as possible if you plan to keep it for later. When stored in the refrigerator in a clean, airtight container, it generally stays at its best quality for about 3 to 4 days. After that, the flavor begins to deteriorate, becoming stale or bitter, even if it hasn’t spoiled.

If the coffee has been left at room temperature for more than a couple of hours, however, it’s best to throw it away. Warm temperatures allow bacteria and mold to grow much more quickly, especially if the coffee contains milk, cream, flavored syrups, or sugar. Those ingredients shorten its safe storage time significantly and should never be left unrefrigerated.

A thermos can keep coffee hot or cold for several hours, but it’s not designed for long-term food storage. Unless the thermos has been refrigerated the entire time, it’s not a safe place to keep coffee for several days.

If you’re ever unsure, trust your senses. An unusual smell, sour taste, or visible mold means it’s time to discard it. For the best combination of flavor and safety, brew only what you’ll use within a few days, refrigerate leftovers promptly, and enjoy your iced coffee while it’s still fresh.
