My Daughter’s Husband Wanted My House—Then Lost Everything

Derek tried to dismiss the documents as old misunderstandings, but Sophia kept reading. By the fourth page, she had found the lawsuit accusing him of transferring a client’s savings without permission. By the sixth, she discovered the unpaid judgments he had hidden throughout their engagement.

Then I placed one final document on the table.

It was a draft management agreement Derek had prepared using my property’s legal description. He planned to persuade me to sign it under the claim that it would “protect” the house. In reality, it would have allowed his company to borrow against it and collect management fees.

Sophia stared at him. He blamed a former business partner, then accused me of invading his privacy. I reminded him that he had arrived uninvited and questioned me about my assets before unpacking his suitcase.

My attorney joined us by video call and explained that Derek’s attempt had been documented. Security had also recorded him photographing papers inside my office the previous evening.

I gave them one hour to pack. Their access code had already been canceled, and a security officer waited outside.

Sophia asked whether I was really choosing a house over my daughter.

“No,” I replied. “I’m choosing not to lose my home to the husband you brought here to inspect it.”

By sunrise, their luggage was back in the car—and my house was still entirely mine.
