The Family Finally Had to Pay Their Own Bill

Halfway through dinner, I excused myself and found our waiter near the kitchen.

“I need one favor,” I said. “Please separate my husband’s and my meals from everyone else’s. We’ll pay ours now.”

He looked relieved.

Apparently, the staff had already noticed the pattern.

I paid for Ethan and myself, added a generous tip, and returned to the table.

Nobody suspected a thing.

Dessert came.

Coffee came.

Then the waiter placed several checks around the table.

For three full seconds, nobody moved.

My sister-in-law finally laughed.

“There’s been a mistake. She’s paying.”

I took a sip of coffee.

“No mistake.”

The laughter disappeared.

My father-in-law stared at his portion.

“But it’s my birthday.”

“And Ethan and I already paid for your cake.”

Then came the arguments.

Some people claimed they hadn’t brought enough money.

Others suddenly remembered how expensive the lobster was.

One brother tried to slide his check toward me.

I slid it back.

“You ordered it. You pay for it.”

Ethan looked embarrassed at first.

Then his oldest sister complained that I had “set everyone up.”

That finally made him speak.

“No,” he said. “You all ordered like someone else’s money didn’t matter.”

The family spent the next twenty minutes splitting cards, transferring money, and quietly regretting several appetizers.

Nobody forgot their wallet at the next dinner.

Nobody called me the walking credit card again either.

I never minded treating people who appreciated it.

What I stopped doing was financing people who only became generous when the bill belonged to someone else.
