The Family Dinner And The Unexpected Guest Who Made One Selfish Debt Impossible To Ignore

The guest I had invited was Gerald, Vanessa’s own father. What she did not know was that a week earlier, I had quietly gone to see him, not out of spite, but because I had run out of gentler options. Gerald was an old-fashioned man who had raised his daughter to pay her debts and respect her elders, and he had no idea she had taken eight thousand dollars from a widowed retiree and laughed about it. Gerald asked, innocently, why a woman would have no emergency savings at seventy. And that was when I looked at Vanessa across the table and said, gently, that perhaps she would like to explain it herself. The color drained from her face for the second time that night. My brother, her husband, set down his fork, because he had not known either. Vanessa had told him the car repair was covered by a payment plan. She had never mentioned whose money had actually paid for it.
