What The Fertility Folder On That Kitchen Table Had Said On Page Nine, And Who Finally Read It Out Loud

Coralie laughed. She actually laughed, right there in the waiting room, and said fostering was not the same thing and everyone knew it. Rowan said nothing, exactly as they had said nothing at the table four years running.

So I said the part I had been carrying since our third consultation. The folder between us that night had a page nine. Sperm morphology, motility, count. Every number below threshold. The specialist had explained it to both of us in the same room, and Rowan had nodded and shaken his hand and then driven us home in silence and never mentioned it again. For four years I let his mother call me an empty branch while he sat there knowing.

Sabine put down the diaper bag. She was seven months along and she asked one question, quietly: “Is that true?” Rowan did not answer fast enough. Coralie started to speak and Sabine told her to stop, in a voice I would not have dared use at that table.

They left separately. I know that because I watched through the glass.

Wren’s adoption finalized in March. She is three now and she says my name like it is two words. Sabine’s son was born in October and he is Rowan’s, which surprised nobody who understands that a low count is not a zero, and I am glad for the boy. Sabine sends me a photograph at Christmas. I send one back. It is not friendship, but it is not nothing.

Coralie has never apologized. She never will. She sends me a card each December addressed to my full name, no mention of Wren, as if a child she refuses to name cannot exist.

Rowan asked to meet for coffee last spring. He wanted to say sorry, and he did, and it was a decent apology as those things go. Then he asked whether things might have been different if he had spoken up.

I said probably. Then I paid for my own coffee, went home, and made macaroni for a girl who is not related to me by a single cell and who has never once had to wonder whether she was wanted.
