David asked if I had skipped the Saturday meal, and I simply nodded.
The question sounded ordinary, but something about it felt different. He asked as if he already knew the answer and was only waiting for confirmation. I didn’t explain. I didn’t defend myself. I just reached beside the couch and picked up a worn folder I had placed there earlier. The moment it landed on the coffee table, the room changed. David looked at it. Then Victoria. “What’s that?” he asked. “Look through it,” I replied.
Inside were three years of receipts, bank statements, and household expense records. Every grocery trip, utility bill, repair, mortgage payment, and shared cost had been carefully documented.
David turned page after page. Slowly, the confidence in his expression began to disappear. He had always believed he carried the financial burden.
The numbers were about to show him a very different reality.
