Wesley turned toward Dad slowly, the frozen frame of his own truck still glowing on the television behind him. For a moment he said nothing, and the silence in that living room was the loudest thing I had ever heard. Then his voice cracked, and the words fell out of him before he could stop them. “You told me to do it. You said if I scared her enough, she’d just hand over the keys.”
Dad’s face went white. Tanya’s hand flew to her mouth. I stood perfectly still, because after eight years of putting chaos into order, I had learned that the most important moment is the one right after the truth arrives.
