Why Costco Really Checks Your Receipt Before You Leave

A lot of shoppers assume Costco employees check receipts at the exit mainly to catch shoplifters. But according to Costco itself, that is not the main reason for the routine.

Costco says receipt verification is standard practice at its warehouses because employees want to double-check that everything in the cart was processed correctly at checkout. The company says the process helps maintain inventory accuracy and, importantly, helps make sure members were charged properly.

That means the employee at the door may notice mistakes such as an item being scanned twice, something being missed entirely, or a quantity being entered incorrectly. Catching an overcharge before the shopper leaves can save them from having to return later to correct the problem.

The receipt check also helps Costco keep its inventory records accurate. If items leave the warehouse without being properly recorded—or if merchandise is accidentally scanned incorrectly—the store’s inventory counts can become unreliable.

Costco’s membership conditions specifically state that receipts and merchandise are inspected as members leave to ensure purchases were charged correctly.

So while the process can certainly discourage theft as a side effect, Costco’s stated explanation is much simpler: the exit check is primarily an accuracy check for both the warehouse and the customer.
