The Contract They Never Read Handed Me The Restaurant They Tried To Steal

My father picked up the document with the impatient air of a man humoring a child. Then he reached the clause, and his face went slack. I watched him read it a second time, his lips moving slightly, as the meaning finally reached him. The agreement he had called unnecessary, the paperwork Bristol had barely glanced at, contained one provision they had all skimmed past in their desperation. It had been notarized the same afternoon I transferred the money, reviewed by an attorney I had hired precisely because Desmond had warned me how this would end. My mother’s fork finally lowered to her plate. My father looked at me the way people look at a door they thought was decoration and just discovered was locked. “Meredith,” he started, then corrected himself, “Colette, we can talk about this.” I told him we already had. Months ago. In writing. He simply hadn’t listened.
