The ceremony blurred around me while that single word echoed. Rosa. My mother had called me that. My grandmother. And one boy, forty years ago, a whole life and an ocean of choices away. I studied his face beneath the gray at his temples, the strong line of his jaw, and slowly the past rose up through the man beside me like a face surfacing in water. “Mateo,” I breathed. He smiled, just barely, and pressed my hand tighter. “You remember.” Of course I remembered.
