The Wedding Discount Disappeared With My Silence

The next morning, my mother called crying.

“Nadia, please call the venue. They’re canceling Derek’s wedding.”

I corrected her.

“They’re not canceling it.”

I had only withdrawn the services and discounts that existed because of me.

For months, I had arranged reduced catering rates, waived staffing fees, complimentary dessert service, and a significant venue discount through my position.

Without those benefits, Derek’s wedding could still happen.

It would simply cost nearly $18,000 more.

Mom’s voice sharpened.

“You can’t do this over a cake.”

“This isn’t over a cake.”

It was about watching my daughter cry while everyone protected the person who hurt her.

Derek called next.

He started with anger.

Then bargaining.

Finally, he said, “You know we can’t afford the full price.”

I looked across the kitchen at Lily decorating cupcakes we had baked together that morning.

“Then choose a wedding you can afford.”

He accused me of ruining everything.

I reminded him that I had never promised to finance his wedding. I had simply used benefits available through my work because I believed I was helping family.

After what happened at Lily’s birthday, I no longer wanted my professional favors involved.

The wedding eventually happened at a smaller venue.

No luxury menu.

No elaborate dessert table.

No discount.

My parents remained angry for months.

Lily did not.

For her seventh birthday, she helped me make another pink cake.

When we placed it on the table, she smiled and asked one question.

“Nobody can throw this one away, right?”

I kissed her forehead.

“Not while I’m here.”

Derek lost a discount.

What I finally stopped losing was my daughter’s trust.
