The Interview Became Her Way Out

Adrienne leaned forward.

“I’m not interviewing you for the junior analyst position.”

I stared at her.

The HR director turned the tablet toward me. At the top of the screen was a different title:

Predictive Systems Engineer.

Adrienne explained that my thesis had already been circulating internally after one of my professors forwarded it with my permission months earlier. The interview was partly to confirm that I had actually built the model myself.

Then she asked the question I had not prepared for.

“Do you have unrestricted access to your own money?”

I hesitated.

That hesitation answered enough.

After the interview, HR connected me with an employee financial-wellness adviser who explained something embarrassingly simple: I was eighteen. My paycheck did not have to continue entering the joint account my father controlled.

That afternoon, I opened an account in my own name.

My first Meridian paycheck went there.

So did every one after it.

I got the job.

Not because Adrienne felt sorry for my suit.

Because I could explain every assumption in those forty-seven pages while three senior engineers tried to break my model.

Before I left, Adrienne let me keep the blazer until my first day.

When I came home, Mom immediately asked how badly I had embarrassed myself.

I placed the offer letter on the kitchen counter.

Melissa stopped recording.

Dad read the salary twice.

Then he asked how much of it I planned to contribute to the household.

“For now?” I said.

“None.”

Three weeks later, I moved into a small apartment near the harbor.

I eventually returned Adrienne’s blazer.

But I kept Melissa’s old suit.

Not to wear.

To remember the morning everyone in my house dressed me like someone destined to fail—and I walked out anyway.
