Marco’s Secret Job Was Nothing Like I Imagined

Marco stared at me for several seconds.

Then he slowly moved aside.

On the table behind him were silicone practice skins, sterile pigment cartridges, and photographs of women showing surgical scars across their chests.

I felt sick.

“What is this?”

His voice dropped.

“I do medical tattooing.”

I didn’t understand.

Then he explained.

Marco specialized in scar camouflage and realistic areola restoration for women who had undergone mastectomies, reconstructive surgery, burns, and other procedures that had changed their bodies.

That explained the reviews.

“Marco made me feel beautiful again.”

“My husband doesn’t know.”

Women came to him privately because some weren’t ready to discuss the procedures even with their families.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I became angrier.

“You told me you worked at a hospital.”

“I started there,” he said. “Then I opened this clinic three years ago.”

Three years.

Our entire marriage.

The late nights weren’t affairs.

But they weren’t all emergencies either.

Marco had quietly built a successful private practice and hidden it because his family considered tattooing embarrassing, and he became terrified I would think the same.

I looked around the room.

“You trusted strangers with the truth about your life before you trusted your wife.”

That was the part that nearly ended us.

Not his profession.

The lie.

We eventually went to counseling.

Months later, Marco finally invited me back properly.

This time, I didn’t arrive under my maiden name.

And when he introduced me to the receptionist, he didn’t hide who either of us was.
