The Wall Hid Nathaniel’s Final Answer

I stood in that bedroom the next afternoon with Nathaniel’s attorney beside me.

The wallpaper had been restored, but one section near the old window frame sounded hollow when I tapped it.

Behind it was a narrow metal box.

Inside were two things.

The first was a photograph of Nathaniel and me at seventeen, sitting on the hood of his father’s truck.

The second was my original college acceptance letter.

Across the bottom, in my father’s handwriting, were instructions to forward all correspondence from Nathaniel back to his family.

Then came the final proof.

A signed note from my father explaining that he had intercepted Nathaniel’s letters because he believed I would “throw away my future” if we stayed together.

I sat on the floor.

For fifty-seven years, I had carried guilt for leaving.

Nathaniel had carried rejection.

Neither story had been true.

His last envelope contained only a few lines.

He wrote that marrying me had never been the trap.

The trap was leaving me with so much evidence that I would finally be forced to stop blaming myself.

The house remained mine.

I did not turn it into a shrine.

I moved in.

I kept one room exactly as Nathaniel restored it and changed everything else.

New curtains.

New paint.

My furniture.

My life.

He had spent his final months giving me something more valuable than property.

He gave me back the girl I had been before other people rewrote her story.
