The Housewarming Party Became Gloria’s Biggest Embarrassment

At 11:57 Saturday morning, Gloria’s caravan turned through the stone gates.

The laughter stopped almost immediately.

The “slum” was a five-bedroom house on three acres with a wraparound porch, detached workshop, swimming pool, and enough parking for every relative she had invited.

Gloria stepped out of her car slowly.

“Whose house is this?”

“Mine,” I said.

Ryan finally smiled.

What Gloria had never bothered asking was where my money came from.

Before marrying Ryan, I had inherited part of my grandfather’s manufacturing company. I still worked remotely for it and had spent years saving while we stayed with Gloria because Ryan wanted to help her after his father died.

The $950 I paid her each month had never been all we could afford.

It was what she demanded.

The Section 8 flyer had come from a community housing project my company supported.

I had left it where Gloria would find it because by then I knew she searched our room.

Fifty relatives stood behind her in complete silence.

Aunt Karen was the first to speak.

“Gloria, didn’t you say Cassandra was broke?”

Nobody laughed at me anymore.

Gloria tried to recover.

“Well, obviously Ryan paid for this.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No, Mom. Cassandra did.”

That afternoon, everyone stayed for lunch.

Everyone except Gloria.

She left after twenty minutes.

I never threw her out.

I didn’t need to.

She had brought fifty people expecting to watch me be humiliated.

All I had to do was open my own front door and let her explain herself.
