The House Sale Ended Roland’s Free Ride

The black SUV belonged to the buyers.

Roland stared at it, then at me.

“You sold it with us still living here?”

“I sold my house,” I said. “And the buyers were informed that you were occupants.”

That mattered, because despite everything, I was not going to pretend I could simply throw a family onto the street overnight. My attorney had already prepared the proper written notice required for them to move out.

Roland’s anger changed instantly into panic.

“Mom, where are we supposed to go?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Six months earlier, he had promised his stay would be temporary.

Now temporary had finally reached an end date.

Bethany started crying. Roland apologized for the steak, the nursing-home comment, the credit-card charges, even Christmas.

Thirty-one calls came over the next two days.

I answered the thirty-second.

“Are you sorry,” I asked, “or are you scared?”

He had no answer.

The sale closed.

After the mortgage and expenses, the remaining money went into my retirement accounts and a smaller place that required far less upkeep.

Roland and Bethany eventually rented an apartment.

For the first time in years, they paid their own utilities, bought their own groceries, and figured out childcare without expecting me to rearrange my life.

My new balcony overlooks a garden.

I drink coffee there every morning.

Roland thought calling me useless would make me work harder to prove my worth.

Instead, it reminded me that I had already spent seventy-one years proving it.

I did not need his permission to enjoy whatever came next.
