The Apple Tree Lesson Changed Warren’s Attitude

Grant came home with a plan that did not involve shouting, threats, or another argument across the fence.

He called an arborist.

The next afternoon, the arborist inspected the branches hanging over our property and confirmed that several were dropping fruit directly onto our yard and needed routine trimming anyway.

Grant checked the local rules first.

Then, staying entirely on our side of the property line, he had the overhanging branches professionally trimmed back to the boundary.

Not the whole tree.

Not enough to damage it.

Just everything extending into our yard.

Warren came outside halfway through.

“What are you doing?”

Grant showed him the arborist’s paperwork.

“You were very clear that every apple from your tree belongs to you.”

Warren folded his arms.

“So?”

“So we thought we’d make sure they stay on your property.”

That autumn, almost no apples landed beneath our swing set.

No rotten fruit beside the shed.

No sticky mess in the driveway.

And Warren suddenly discovered something he had apparently never considered.

Those branches had produced a lot of fruit.

He complained that we had reduced his harvest.

Grant simply said, “You wanted your apples on your side.”

Then he showed Warren the photographs of Ivy and Felix carrying fruit while being called thieves.

Warren’s face changed.

A few days later, he knocked on our door holding a small basket of apples.

He apologized to the kids.

I did not force them to hug him or immediately forgive him.

But Ivy took one apple.

Felix took another.

And Warren never again stood at our fence telling my children they were thieves.

Sometimes the best lesson is simply giving someone exactly the boundary they demanded.
