The House Was Gone, But Gerald Lost More

The fire investigator called Vivian that afternoon.

The blaze had started behind an overloaded electrical panel in the basement.

An accident.

Nothing more sinister.

But Gerald did not know that when he was discharged twelve days later and arrived in Eden Prairie expecting to bring Priscilla into Vivian’s home.

He found a blackened shell behind temporary fencing.

Then he found Vivian’s attorney waiting.

The house had always been Vivian’s separate property, purchased with an inheritance from her parents before Gerald’s name was ever connected to it.

His “legal agent” had no authority to transfer the title.

And Vivian had already notified the insurer that all settlement communications were to go directly through her attorney.

Gerald stared at the ruins.

“Where am I supposed to live?”

Vivian’s attorney handed him another envelope.

Divorce papers.

The envelope Vivian had taken from the house before the fire contained something else: test results from the private clinic.

Months earlier, after noticing unexplained charges and Gerald’s secret appointments, Vivian had discovered he and Priscilla had been planning a future together long before his transplant.

She had stayed because Gerald was sick.

She donated because she had already promised herself she would not let betrayal decide whether another person lived.

But saving his life did not obligate her to surrender the rest of hers.

Gerald kept the kidney.

Vivian kept the insurance proceeds from her property and eventually bought a smaller home near her sister.

When Gerald later asked how she could leave after twenty-two years, she answered simply:

“I didn’t leave when you got sick.”

“I left when I learned what you thought my love was worth.”
