I Found Tiny White Specks in My Child’s Hair—What I Learned Changed Everything

head lice are incredibly common among school-aged children, and they have nothing to do with poor hygiene. In fact, lice spread mainly through close head-to-head contact during play, sports, or sleepovers—not because a child is “dirty.”

The first signs are often persistent itching and tiny nits (lice eggs) attached firmly to the hair near the scalp. Unlike dandruff, they don’t brush away easily. If you suspect lice, use a fine-tooth lice comb under bright light to check carefully. As alarming as it feels, staying calm is one of the most important steps. Children often mirror their parents’ emotions, so reassuring them that “lots of kids get lice” can help prevent embarrassment and fear.

Treatment usually involves an over-the-counter lice shampoo or lotion, followed by careful combing to remove nits. A second treatment is often recommended about a week later to eliminate newly hatched lice.

There’s no need to deep-clean your entire home. Washing recently used bedding, hats, and hairbrushes is generally enough, since lice can’t survive long away from the human scalp.

While dealing with lice is certainly inconvenient, it’s a temporary problem that millions of families face every year. With patience, consistent treatment, and a little reassurance, most cases are resolved within a couple of weeks—and life quickly returns to normal.
