Whose Building I Had Drawn, And Why Forty-Eight Missed Calls Turned Out To Be About Something Else Entirely

The building was Verenne itself. The restaurant occupies the top floor of the Lachlan Exchange, and the man in the dark suit owned both. I had drawn that facade in November from a bus shelter across the street because the cornice lighting is beautiful at four in the afternoon.

He did not buy the drawing. That is the version my family tells. What he actually did was call the bill a house matter, comp it in full, and give me the number of a woman who curates the lobby rotation for six of his properties. Whether that generosity was kindness or a very cheap way to get eleven original works on his walls, I have never fully decided. Probably both.

I signed with her in April. Fourteen pieces across three lobbies. It is not fame. It is eleven hundred a month and my name on a small brass plate, which is more than the gallery ever paid me.

The forty-eight calls were not an apology. My father’s deal with Desmond Fairchild had collapsed that same week, and Desmond’s wife had told half of Bryn Mawr what happened at that table. My parents were calling because the story was circulating and they needed me to confirm it had been a joke. Seven messages, and the word sorry appears in none of them. I have read them enough times to be certain.

I moved out of their house in May with two suitcases and slept on Delphine’s floor for nine weeks. Aunt Rosalind co-signed my lease in August. She has never once asked me what I do for a living in that tone people use.

I saw my mother at a pharmacy in February. She looked at my coat, and then at my face, and said I seemed tired. That was the whole conversation.

My father was right about one thing, in the end. It was life training. Just not the lesson he paid sixteen thousand dollars to teach.
