What The Notebooks Were Actually Recording, And The Reason My Sister Has Never Been Able To Look At Me Since

Adoption papers. Mine.

The date Rosalind stopped at was the day I was placed, and the numbers in those notebooks were payments. Forty-one months of them, in my mother’s handwriting, made to a young woman in Ashford named Delia who was nineteen and could not keep me, and who asked only that someone help her finish nursing school. My mother paid it out of a waitress’s wages while raising two children.

The drawer held Delia’s letters. Thirty years of them. She wrote every December. She never asked to meet me. She wrote to say thank you, and to report small things, a job, a marriage, a son.

Rosalind found the drawer when she was twenty-two. She never said a word to me. Not once, in twenty-six years. She told me that afternoon, standing in our mother’s living room, that she had kept quiet because if I knew, I might go looking, and then our mother would have given me away twice and she could not watch that. She thought she was protecting a family. She was really just protecting the arrangement where she was the real daughter.

I understand it. I have not forgiven it.

Delia died in 2021. Forty-eight, a stroke. My mother knew and did not tell me, which is the part that still sits badly.

I wrote to her son in February. He is thirty-one, lives in Ashford, works for the county. We have met twice. It is careful and strange and I intend to keep going.

My mother is seventy-six now. I love her more than I did before, not less, which surprised me. She spent forty-one months of her life paying a debt nobody asked her to take on, for a daughter who was not hers, and never once mentioned it.

Rosalind sends money at Christmas now. Real amounts. She still cannot meet my eyes across a table, and I have stopped trying to make her.
