Most Drivers Misunderstand Green Vehicle Lights—Here’s What They Actually Signal on the Road

Most drivers instantly recognize flashing red and blue lights, but a flashing green light can be confusing. If you’ve ever seen one on the road, you may have wondered whether you’re supposed to pull over or simply continue driving.

The meaning depends on where you live, but in many areas, green lights are used by medical transport vehicles, volunteer emergency responders, or other authorized service vehicles.

Unlike police cars or ambulances, these vehicles usually do not have special traffic privileges. They must obey speed limits, traffic signals, and all normal road laws.

Instead, the green light serves as a reminder that the vehicle may be transporting someone with important medical needs, such as a patient traveling to dialysis, chemotherapy, rehabilitation, or another essential appointment.

The light isn’t meant to demand the right of way. Rather, it encourages nearby drivers to stay aware and, when it’s safe to do so, show courtesy by allowing the vehicle to merge or avoiding unnecessary delays. Small acts of patience can make a meaningful difference for passengers who rely on timely medical transportation.
